Wardrobes

This has been an ongoing project for a number of years. I have spent many years taking photographs of performers in theatrical spaces and was intrigued to see what would happen if people posed for me inside these essentially private places.

Personal belongings are kept here, not just clothes but objects with special meanings and memories. Children often see them as spaces where adults hide secrets and I also always felt there were secrets in my parent’s wardrobes.

When I saw Claude Cahun’s photographic self-portrait in a wardrobe, almost womb like squashed between two shelves, I was struck by the strangeness of a person within that particular space and what it said about a person’s identity.
