In 1991 I was commissioned by Hackney Museum to document the working lives of women in Hackney in the east end of London. These photographs are a celebration of all these amazing women whose variety of work was often unrecognised and they range from rubbish collectors as on their rounds, machinists who were working behind the scenes creating garments for Burberry to be sold all round the world, the staff at Homerton Hospital where you quickly realise that everyone from Drs, nurses, midwives, admin staff to cleaners and porters are all equally important to each other and the patients. Then there are the women driving buses, street sweeping, firefighting, running projects in the community and making films in their kitchens.
